“Best Club Person” Award

Name of 2022 Winner is Gary Fitzgerald.

Gary Fitzgerald took over running C Grade in 2019. At that time, the viability of C Grade participation was desperate with low numbers and a lack of atmosphere and enthusiasm. He obtained his initial Coaching qualification and at his home that he fitted out with a remarkable table tennis facility started work encouraging and coaching new players. Since that time and through two years of Covid interference, Gary has worked tirelessly at encouraging new players and organising the C Grade competition.

His enthusiasm and organising ability has been appreciated and supported by the players to the extent that now we have 14 teams in the C Grade competition. Such a turnaround in participation has never been achieved by anyone else in this Association before.

As Grade Supervisor, he organises the teams players and fill-ins as well as the weekly ladders and results but in addition submits all the Rating Central results for the C Grade Players.

In addition, Gary has setup our homepage and helps to maintain it. This is a remarkable effort, achievement and result that clearly identifies Gary Fitzgerald as the “Best Club Person” for 2022.

Jeff Rogers, for whom this award is named, would have been proud of Gary Fitzgerald’s achievement and effort.

Award Background

Jeff Rogers was a very popular and hard working member of the BDTTA. Jeff filled various positions on the committee for many years and was Vice President in 2014 when he sadly passed away. Jeff not only loved playing table tennis, but he very much enjoyed the social aspect of the club as well. This award is to remember Jeff and to honour the great contribution he made to the BDTTA.

The award is to be given to a person who works for the benefit of the club, dedicated to helping with various activities for the benefit of the sport. They work tirelessly without the expectation of recognition, often the ‘unsung hero’. This person does not have to be an office holder or have any specific job, but members of the committee are not excluded. No minimum years of service are required to attain this award.

I wish to thank the Club for this award and would like to thank all of the players who have supported our efforts in making the competition as enjoyable as possible for everyone. It is nice to see everyone participating at all levels.
